Mahomes sharp as Chiefs rout Bengals

-

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes picked up where he left off from his record-breaking debut as a starter, marching the Kansas City Chiefs downfield for a first-quarter touchdown in what became a 3817 preseason victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday night.

Mahomes did a bit of everything on the only series by Kansas City’s first-team offense, going 4-for-4 for 66 yards while adding a 10yard scramble and inducing an an offside penalty.

Andy Dalton was nearly as sharp for Cincinnati, going 7-of-9 for 80 yards while leading his team on a 14play, 75-yard touchdown march to open the game. In other action:

Nathan Peterman scrambled 50 yards to set up his only touchdown throw as Oakland beat the visiting Los Angeles Rams 14-3 in the preseason opener for both teams. Peterman entered in the third quarter and completed nine of 12 passes for 66 yards. He also had 56 yards rushing.

Lions put Kearse on injured list

The Detroit Lions placed wide receiver Jermaine Kearse on injured reserve and signed quarterback Josh Johnson.

Kearse hurt his left leg during Detroit’s first possession of Thursday night’s preseason opener against New England — a 31-3 loss. He has played seven seasons and joined the Lions as a free agent this offseason from the New York Jets.

Quarterback Tom Savage was removed from the game at Ford Field when his head hit the turf on a sack. Johnson started three games for Washington last season. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fifth round in 2008 out of San Diego and has passed for 1,632 yards in 33 games.

Jags’ Robinson, Lee still sidelined

The Jacksonville Jaguars don’t expect left tackle Cam Robinson and receiver Marqise Lee to be ready for the season opener.

Coach Doug Marrone provided an update on the two starters, saying “we just can’t get them over the hump. We’ve got to go and start preparing to play without them, unfortunately. It could change, obviously, but it’d be tough.”

Robinson, a secondround draft pick in 2017, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last September. Lee, who led the team in receptions in 2017, tore several ligaments in his left knee when Atlanta cornerback Damontae Kazee delivered a helmet-first hit to his knee in a preseason game last August.

Neither has practiced in training camp, and both remain on the physically unable-to-perform list.

Cardinals release Philon after arrest

The Arizona Cardinals released defensive end Darius Philon a day after Maricopa County jail records indicate he was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly instrument.

A Phoenix police spokeswoman confirmed that Philon had been arrested but declined to provide further information, referring a reporter to court documents that were not immediately available Saturday.

According to TMZ, Philon was taken to a Maricopa County jail Friday on charges from an incident in May outside a Phoenixarea strip club. A court video of Philon’s initial court appearance posted by KPNX-TV showed that a judge set bond for Philon and imposed conditions that included allowing Philon to travel out of state for work.

Philon, 25, was a projected starter after signing in the offseason as a free agent. He started the Cardinals’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday and played briefly, recording an assist on a tackle. The team had Friday off and reconvened for training camp Saturday without him.
