San Antonio Express-News (Sunday)
Pick up phone, call
Rep. Joaquin Castro’s transgression was not in his revealing of public information; it was his implying that the named donors agree with the most racist of the president’s policies. I am a liberal, but I count many conservatives among my friends, including people like Phyllis Browning, Balous Miller and Ed Kelly. When I question why anyone does something, I call them up, ask them and dare to listen to their answers. People called out by Rep. Castro would have taken his call — I have verified that with some.
Instead, he chose to read their minds and choose the worst Trump trait and pin it on them. The six friends I have on that list have done a great deal to improve San Antonio and improve opportunities among our Hispanic majority, including getting the UTSA campus placed downtown, funding scholarships, doing public service, revitalizing the inner city and employing thousands, including many in management jobs. If an entity cannot operate and/or grow with existing or anticipated income and expenses, should the person who oversees the entity be compensated above his or her already considerable salary? I think not! While I realize it’s more complicated than that, one must wonder how the folks who really make CPS and SAWS run efficiently — the linemen, ditch diggers, office personnel — feel knowing the
“big shots” will score a substantial bonus while their work sees no such reward?

Most homeowners can buy a federal flood policy for less than $500 a year for property outside of high-risk flood zones. Visit FEMA’s website (FloodSmart.gov) for more information and the rate chart. Some private insurers also offer flood coverage. Renters will find contents-only policies that cover their belongings at an even lower cost.
We live in some of the state’s most flood-prone areas. If you don’t have flood insurance, the time is now. We have all read the stories of flood victims struggling to recover financially after a catastrophic flood. Let’s learn from them.
