Demand clean water

-

As the City Council considers the future of the Edwards Aquifer Protection Program and elimination of the ⅛-cent sales tax that funds this program, it is also quietly catering to developers building over the aquifer recharge zone.

A recent rezoning case was opposed by the San Antonio River Authority and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance. Even that was not enough to stop this rezoning plan.

This Zoning Commission vote shows just how little some officials care about protecting the aquifer and what the true fate of any city-funded plan will be. When the council was debating the future of the aquifer protection program, the questions asked were: “When can we say we have done enough?” Or “Just how long does this need to go on?”

The answer to those questions is simple: When the developers stop building over the recharge zone, we can stop protecting it, and not one minute sooner.

Please, contact your City Council representative and tell him or her the voters should be allowed to have a say by demanding the ⅛-cent sales tax for the Edwards Aquifer Protection Program be put on the November ballot. The Pre-K 4 SA program helps a very small percent of our preschool population and is on the ballot, but everyone drinks the water.
