Graduation at Holy Cross is a long family tradition

- By Jacob Arguello Jacob Arguello is a graduating senior at Holy Cross of San Antonio.

mom and my grandfather were at the game.

The game was kind of a blur, but as I walked off the field, I heard the parents say they wanted to take pictures of the seniors. It was then I knew that our season was probably over.

When we were told that our spring break would be extended another week because of the virus, I wasn’t really upset about it. My senior year had been fun so far, but it had also been very busy with all the activities that I was involved with. It wasn’t until they extended our online distance learning into May that I realized that I might already have spent my final days walking the halls of Holy Cross.

I missed my classmates and teachers, but I know that my involvement with Holy Cross is not over. I plan on following in the footsteps of all my uncles, cousins, brother and friends by giving back to the school that I have grown to love.

Holy Cross instituted a mentorship program, with alumni volunteering to “adopt” a senior member of the Class of 2020. I was fortunate to be “adopted” by Ricardo Cedillo, Class of 1971, Ricardo Cedillo. I already knew Mr. Cedillo because his son is one of my teammates from football, basketball, baseball and track. He also is the brother of my football coach, Angel Cedillo (Class of 1980). As you can see, Holy Cross is like one big family where you almost always know someone who is involved with the school.

COVID-19 may have thrown us seniors a curve ball with our graduation plans, but I am ready and prepared for the next chapter in my life.

I will be starting my freshman year at the University of Texas at San Antonio in the fall. I am not sure if we are going to be on campus or online, but I am sure that I will be ready for anything.

If COVID-19 has taught me anything, it is to appreciate every day and be thankful for the things that God has given to you. COVID-19 will not rob me of anything if I don’t allow it. I have my faith. I have my family. I have my health. That’s all that anyone really needs.
