Cowboys pick Gilbert to start vs. unbeaten Steelers.

With Dalton on COVID list and DiNucci shaky lastweek, ex-UT and SMU product is next man up

The Cowboys have named their fourth starting quarterback in five weeks.

Garrett Gilbert, the SMU and Texas product, will start today against the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, a source said Saturday. Gilbert’s agent confirmed in a tweet that his client will start against the Steelers.

Since Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending ankle injury, the Cowboys have had a revolving door at quarterback.

After Andy Dalton went down with a concussion against Washington, seventh-round pick Ben DiNucci started against the Eagles last week. Dalton was expected to return against the Steelers, but was placed on the COVID-19 list after testing positive for the virus.

Throughout the week, Gilbert competed with Cooper Rush for the starting job.

The Cowboys signed Gilbert, a 2014 sixth-round pick, shortly after Prescott went down to add depth. Gilbert has only six career pass attempts to his name (two completed for 40 yards).

Meanwhile, add running back to the long list of injury concerns for the Cowboys.

Ezekiel Elliott is listed as questionable for today’s game after hurting his hamstring in the fourth quarter of the team’s loss to Philadelphia when he tried to chase down Rodney McLeod on the safety’s 53-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Cowboys coach MikeMcCarthy suggested Elliott will be a gametime decision.

“He’s got a hamstring that we’re just being smart with,” McCarthy said. ”That’s why he was limited.

“He feels better, but our work (Saturday) will tell us a lot, and we’ll take it all the way to the pregame workout.”

Tony Pollard will start if Elliott can’t play. He had seven carries for 40 yards and caught two passes for another 24 yards against the Eagles.

”Tony Pollard is as ready for as much or any role we put him in,” McCarthy said. “I’ve been very impressed with him. I think the last three weeks he’s played very well.”

In a sign that Elliott might be trending in the wrong direction, theCowboys onSaturday elevated fullback Sewo Olonilua from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. He’ll add backfield depth behind Pollard and Rico Dowdle if Elliott is inactive.

The Steelers alsomade a couple of moves Saturday, adding newly acquired linebacker Avery Williamson to their 53-man roster while releasing veteran offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski.

Pittsburgh got Williamson in a trade with the New York Jets on Monday, a move designed to provide roster depth at a position decimated by injuries to starter Devin Bush and backup Ulysses Gilbert.

Williamson likely will be inactive today after missing practice this week while i COVID-19 quarantine protocols.

The Steelers also added linebacker Jayrone Elliott to the roster. He likely will see action on special teams against the Cowboys.

The decision to cut Wisnieski ends a brief homecoming for the Pittsburgh native.

The Steelers signed Wisniewski to a two-year deal in March. He suffered a pectoral injury in a season-opening win over the New York Giants and was placed on injured reserve. The team activated him twoweeks ago, but the injury lingered.

The Steelers also cut running back Trey Edmunds, the brother of starting safety Terrell Edmunds.

Pittsburgh moved rookie defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr. to the active roster. He’ll be put back on the practice squad immediately after the game.
