Original Papa’s Burgers closes

The original Papa’s Burgers off Old Highway 90 has closed. But favorites, such as the triple-meat Jack Burton Burger, are served at the location at San Pedro Avenue and Oblate Drive.

After a seven-year run on the West Side that attracted national buzz, the doors closed for good Nov. 12 at the original Papa’s Burgers location off Old Highway 90.

Owner Robert Walker said the decision to close was a culmination of several factors, but ultimately he was not allowed to renew his month-to-month lease.

Despite the closure, it’s hardly the end for Papa’s. Walker opened a new location on the North Side at the corner of San Pedro Avenue and Oblate Drive in April, serving the same menu as the original.

“It’s bittersweet, because every award we ever won was at the original location, but we are bringing the same cooks and same people over to San Pedro,” Walker said. “Papa’s is still Papa’s, and we’re far from over.”

Papa’s Burgers has been the recipient of several national burger accolades. The El Caliente Burger, which comes with a

pound beef patty, pepper jack cheese, sliced jalapeños, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, onions and pickles, was named the best burger in Texas by Eat This, Not That! magazine. And in 2018, a Money magazine report cited Papa’s as the fourth-best burger restaurant in the nation.

In September, Walker opened a breakfast and lunch taco spot next to his North Side restaurant named Papa’s Sartén.
