Seltzers in flavors Texans will love

A Texan can hardly shake their boots out without a spiked seltzer rattling free these days. There are dozens of brands in the crowded seltzer market, and it can be a challenge to decide which to plunk down hard-earned dollars on.

Lone Star Agave Seltzer stands out with a refreshing swagger tailored to the tastes of Texans in lime and watermelon flavors. Lone Star Brewing, which launched here in 1884, recently relocated its headquarters here last year under the ownership of Pabst Brewing Co.

Lone Star’s agave watermelon flavor is where the party really starts. There aren’t many watermelonflavored seltzers on the market, and this version is one of the best. While the flavor is subtle on the palate, this seltzer’s aroma is full of fruit. Crack one open and the smell will leave you wishing you’d rimmed the can with Tajín.

The agave lime flavor likely will become a favorite for many who’ve fallen for the distinctive taste of Texas’ native cocktail, Ranch Water, which has tequila, lime and sparkling mineral water.

While the booze in these beverages comes from simple fermented sucrose, both have a noticeable tequilalike flavor thanks to blue agave nectar. The fruit comes from natural juice concentrates.

They come in at a modest 5 percent alcohol by volume, a little high for a lawnmower seltzer, but perfect beside the pool or packed into a cooler while floating down your favorite river.

The new beverages, which are brewed just up Interstate 35 in Austin, rolled out in early April.

Find Lone Star Agave Seltzers in retail stores across the state priced around $9 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans. The Lime Agave flavor also is available in a 19.2-ounce can for $2.79. More at lonestarbeer.com.
