A new Asian restaurant has opened on the River Walk, and a new tiki bar will open within the next few days. Both are downtown in the Witte building on Commerce Street, near The Esquire Tavern.

Hugman’s Oasis, a tiki bar concept directly on the River Walk, will have an outdoor patio that can accommodate up to 60 patrons. It will be operated under the supervision of beverage director Jeret Peña of the Boulevardier Group.

The new bar was designed by Giles Design Bureau, which brought in Bamboo Ben, a wellknown tiki bar expert who’s worked on such bars as Frankie’s Tiki Room in Las Vegas and Luau in Beverly Hills. Bamboo Ben’s Instagram page, @bamboo_ben_, has photos of the space and shows batik-print bars and banquettes surrounded

by bamboo and skulls.

Hugman’s is named after Robert H.H. Hugman, an architect who is credited with creating the River Walk, and is set to

open Friday.

Asian restaurant House of Má, which will feature a menu developed by Louis Singh and Eric Treviño, the same team

behind the popular Singh’s Vietnamese restaurant on the St. Mary’s Strip, opened Friday. The menu features soups, salads, appetizers and specialty items such as fried catfish, caramel-braised pork, adobo ribs, Vietnamese shaken beef and banana fish.

House of Má is located on the first floor of the building, with private dining available on the second floor and limited outdoor patio seating. The restaurant will begin taking reservations Thursday.

The two concepts come from restaurateur Chris Hill, who also owns The Esquire Tavern.
