Tickets on sale for soon-to-open Mixtli
Mixtli, the progressive Mexican restaurant that closed last year to prepare for a move to Southtown, is a step closer to reopening, possibly as early as the first week of June.
The top-rated restaurant, specializing in themed multicourse Mexican dinners with a regional theme, started selling tickets Saturday on its website, restaurantmixtli.com. Mixtli will follow the same fixed-price, multicourse dinner model it offered at its former location, a converted boxcar at The Yard near Olmos Park, said chef Rico Torres, who co-owns Mixtli with fellow chef Diego Galicia.
But a few changes are coming. The larger space will allow Mixtli to offer seatings throughout the night for tables of two, four and more rather than the one or two seatings of 12 at the former location. They’ll also offer a private dining room for parties up to 12 people.
And the restaurant is adding a full bar where customers can come in without a reservation for drinks and small bites. The new and larger location at 812 S. Alamo St. is across the street from Rosario’s and next door to the newly relocated healthforward restaurant Pharm Table.
In addition to Mixtli being named San Antonio’s best restaurant two years in a row in the Express-News’ “Top 100 Dining & Drinks” guide, Mixtli has earned national acclaim. In 2018, Torres and Galicia were nominated for a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest. And in 2017, Food & Wine magazine named Torres and Galicia among the country’s 12 Best New Chefs.
Last month, they closed Kumo, the small-plates Mexican restaurant they opened in Mixtli’s former boxcar location, with plans to reopen elsewhere in the future.
