Ranks among Best Places for Young Professionals in San Antonio Area
Lavaca ranks No. 2 in Niche.com’s 2021 Best Places for Young Professionals in the San Antonio Area category. The ranking site uses data from the census, FBI, Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources to provide consumer information on neighborhoods, K-12 schools, colleges and more. For this category, Niche.com looked at the number of millennial residents, job opportunities and affordable housing. Researchers also considered access to bars and restaurants.
Lavaca is part of San Antonio’s eclectic Southtown area. According to the city’s website, Lavaca’s residential sector is one of the oldest in the San Antonio area that has survived into modern times. The development of the land that currently makes up much of the neighborhood began in the mid-19th century. Before that time, it was part of the farmlands of Mission San Antonio de Valero that later became The Alamo.
The Lavaca Historic District is southeast of downtown San Antonio. The area’s rich history, diversity, walkability and sense of community are among the reasons it appeals to young professionals. It’s a short distance from downtown tourist attractions such as the River Walk, Hemisfair, La Villita and numerous bars, restaurants and art galleries.
In the last few years, developers have converted several properties into lofts, and new developments are still cropping up. However, Lavaca has managed to keep its historic charm. Recent listings include a 3,660 square-foot home that was built in 1912. The renovated house has four bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and a half bath. It’s priced at $625,000. A threebedroom, three-bathroom townhome with 1,900 square feet also is on the market. The list price for this property, built in 2020, is $549,000. A one-story house built in 1966 has a list price of $359,969. This remodeled home has 1,528 square feet, three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
