A new program is recruiting 100 African Americans for entry-level training in the IT career field. The main eligibility requirements are a passion for technology, a high school diploma, attention to detail and an ability to solve problems.

Seeking to fill roles in the information technology industry, 100 Black Men of San Antonio partnered with NewApprentice to raise awareness about the ServiceNow apprenticeship. Grants and potential employers cover tuition costs.

Milton Harris, executive director of 100 Black Men of San Antonio, said the ideal candidate hasn’t completed an associate degree.

“There are so many great opportunities in the IT space,” Harris said, “and what the data is showing is that very few of those applying are African American.”

Harris said the IT apprenticeship is set up to prepare participants for full-time employment. The 14-month program involves a nine-week pre-employment boot camp and 12 months of coaching, work and training.

The next boot camp is scheduled for June 1, followed by another on June 28.

The program includes an interview with a hiring manager and opportunity to earn a full-time salary (between $35,000 and $42,000 with benefits) as a tech process apprentice with the Global Tech Consulting Firm.

Harris said 100 Black Men will serve as the marketing arm to promote the program over the next 12 months.

The group’s mission is to improve the quality of life within African American neighborhoods and enhance economic and educational opportunities in San Antonio and surrounding areas. The local mentoring group is one of more than 100 chapters across the nation.
