It’s not just summer’s return: Stage scene getting hot again, too

- By Deborah Martin

Summer is here, vaccination rates are rising and San Antonio’s arts and entertainment scene is heating up.

There’s not quite as much to do as in summers past, and mask requirements and reduced capacity to allow for social distancing remain in place at some venues. But that’s slated to change soon.

“By Aug. 6, we’ll be back at full capacity,” said Aaron Zimmerman, vice president of programming for the Tobin Center or the Performing Arts.

“From here, you’re going to see more and more,” Zimmerman said. “It kind of feels like touring artists all want to go out as soon as possible. Everyone seems to feel like September is that early window. It’s gong to be an exciting time as long as people get vaccinated and feel like coming back.”

The Tobin’s calendar bears that out. In the fourth quarter of this year, there are just about a dozen dates open.

“We’ve never had a 100 percent full calendar,” Zimmerman said. “That doesn’t happen. It’s wild.”

The folks at the AT&T Center, who presented a series of well

received concerts and comedy performances in the Bud Light Courtyard when the weather permitted, are looking forward to packing the place again.

“These facilities were built to bring the community together, and so every single person in my group in this organization is focused on bringing people together and creating these moments that exist and memories that endure,” said Casey Heverling, vice president and general manager of the AT&T Center.

“Fans are eager to get out, celebrate and have a good time again in a reasonable way,” he said.
