Horn’s five touchdowns guide Tigers in rout

- By David DeKunder

Multiple Trinity players reached the end zone Saturday as the Tigers rolled over the Hendrix College Warriors, 62-13, at Trinity Stadium.

Trinity (7-0, 5-0 in Southern Athletic Association play) rolled up 591 yards and scored on six of its seven possessions in the first half to take a 41-7 halftime lead.

Tucker Horn led Trinity by throwing for 343 yards on 23of-26 passing and five touchdowns, with Chris Stewart catching two of his scoring tosses.

“It starts up front with the offensive line,” Horn said. “They did a great job today of picking up who they were responsible for and working together to keep a clean pocket. It makes it a lot easier when there’s not defenders in your face (when) throwing the ball, and then the receivers, kudos to them. We had a couple of guys out; they had some young guys who had to step up, and they truly answered the call. Overall, they just did a great job of catching the ball and getting open.”

Trinity coach Jerheme Urban said Horn has had a successful season so far because of his work ethic, as he comes prepared before every game.

“Since he’s got here, he’s really dived into the playbook,” Urban said. “He loves football, he’s out in the office all the time watching film, talking football. He’s very cerebral, and he looks at it like a puzzle. He likes to see how it all fits all together.”

The versatile Stewart, a 5-9 senior from The Woodlands, had 130 all-purpose yards in scoring

three touchdowns, including a

rushing score, for the Tigers.

Stewart returned the opening kickoff 52 yards to set up Trinity’s first score, a 5-yard touchdown pass from Horn to Cole Monago at 10:40 in the first quarter.

With the game tied at 7-7, Stewart ran past his defender to catch a 39-yard score from Horn in stride to put Trinity back up 14-7

with 5:10 in the first. In the second quarter, Stewart scored on a 22-yard catch-and-run on a bubble screen, following his blockers and cutting across the Hendrix secondary to the end zone. He later scored on a 9-yard reverse run with 4:22 left before halftime.

Stewart, who was selected as

the SAA Special Teams Player of the Week after last week’s 66-7 win over Sewanee, said he tries to use his speed and quickness to his advantage any time he gets his hands on the ball.

“Whenever the ball is in my hands, I have to have the mindset of I’m going to try and make something happen,” Stewart said. “I have teammates out there who are thinking the same thing and everyone is executing and doing their job, and that’s the result you get.”

Also scoring for the Tigers were Justin Carmouche on a 3yard run and tight end Marshall Fish, who caught two scoring passes, one from Horn (22 yards) and the other (2 yards) from backup quarterback Will Chaney, who came into the game in the third quarter.

Tight end Anton Noble also caught a 3-yard score from Chaney.

Trinity had five receivers with 50-plus receiving yards, including Monago (84 yards), BJ Stewart (76 yards), Chris Stewart (69 yards) and Caleb Crawford (50 yards).

Defensively, Trinity held Hendrix (1-7, 0-5) to 190 total yards, came up with two sacks and forced two turnovers — a fumble recovery and an interception that both came from linebacker Michael Jewett and led to Trinity scores.

Next Saturday, Trinity will play Birmingham-Southern in a showdown for first place in the Southern Athletic Association. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at General Charles C. Krulak Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.

The Panthers will enter the game undefeated at 8-0 after their 21-3 win over Berry College on Saturday.

“I expect it to be a great battle, that’s a hard place to play,” said Urban about playing at Birmingham-Southern.

“They’ll have an incredible crowd. I think our guys will be excited for the challenge and we’ll have a good week of prepping for that.”
