Montana St. tops Incarnate Word

Tyler Patterson scored a career-high 22 points and Montana State beat host Incarnate Word 83-64 on Saturday.

Patterson shot 8 for 10 from the floor, including 6 of 7 from 3-point range. Xavier Bishop scored 19 points and distribute­d seven assists for Montana State (3-3).

Amin Adamu scored 11 and Jubrile Belo snared 11 rebounds for the visiting Bobcats.

Johnny Hughes III scored 25 points for the Cardinals (0-6) and Dylan Hayman scored 12.

NO. 5 DUKE 84 NO. 1 GONZAGA 81

Paolo Banchero scored 21 points to lead the Blue Devils to an upset of the Bulldogs at Las Vegas Friday night.

Duke (7-0) handed Gonzaga (6-1) its first loss since April’s national title game, when Baylor beat the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga battled back from a nine-point deficit thanks to Julian Strawther’s offensive prowess early in the second half, as he scored eight of the Bulldogs’ first 14 points to help them get within two. But Gonzaga suffered through a 0-for-5 span down the stretch and turned the ball over three times to allow Duke to seize the momentum and close the game on a 13-9 run.

Wendell Moore Jr. scored 20 points and Mark Williams added 17 points and 9 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

NO. 2 UCLA 73, UNLV 51

Jules Bernard scored 18 points and had two blocks to lead the Bruins over the Rebels at Las Vegas.

The Bruins (6-1) shot 47 percent from the field and from 3-point range. Bryce Hamilton led UNLV (4-3) with 15 points.

NORTHERN IOWA 90

NO. 16 S. BONAVENTUR­E 80

AJ Green scored 35 points with four assists to lead the Panthers over the Bonnies at Olean, N.Y.

Green did most of his damage from 3-point territory, making a career-best 9 of 15, to match his career high for scoring.

Kyle Lofton had 21 points, seven assists and four steals for St. Bonaventur­e (5-1).

DeYona Gaston came off the bench to score a careerhigh 19 points on 9-of-11

shooting to lead the Longhorns to a win at home.

Audrey Warren added 13 points and Joanne AllenTaylo­r 12 as the Longhorns (4-1) rebounded from losing to Tennessee in overtime last weekend.

The Matadors (3-2) scored the first seven points of the game and kept pace with the Longhorns through one quarter, trailing 20-16.

NO. 6 BAYLOR 74 HOUSTON 58

NaLyssa Smith had her sixth straight double-double with 21 points and a career-high 19 rebounds and the Bears turned back the Cougars to win the Cancun Challenge at Cancun, Mexico.

Smith had 18 in the second half for her 30th career double-double. Queen Egbo scored 16 points and Ja’Mee Asberry 12 for the Bears (6-1), the only team to go 3-0 in the tournament with Houston (3-4), Arizona State and Fordham each finishing 1-2.

The Bears took control in the third quarter, limiting the Cougars to five points and extending a 34-27 halftime lead to 51-32.

Smith, who missed her first seven shots, scored nine in the quarter, while the defense limited the Cougars to 2-of-16 shooting

The lead got to 28 before Laila Blair led a Houston run, scoring 13 of 28 in the fourth quarter. Bria Patterson had 10 for Houston.

BYU 58

NO. 22 WEST VIRGINIA 57

Shaylee Gonzales scored 20 points, including two free throws with three seconds left, and the Mountainee­rs made just one of two from the line with .4 seconds remaining, giving the Cougars a win in the championsh­ip game of the St. Pete Showcase at St. Petersburg, Fla.

After Esmery Martinez of West Virginia tied the game with a layup with 57 seconds to play the Mountainee­rs had a chance to take the lead after a BYU turnover but they missed a shot. Gonzales was going for the game winner when Martinez fouled her.

With Kari Niblack going for the tie as time ran out, Tegan Graham fouled Niblack. Niblack made the first free throw, BYU called a timeout and Niblack

missed the second shot. Martinez grabbed the rebound but couldn’t get off a winning attempt.

Paisley Harding added 13 points for BYU (7-0), which beat No. 17 Florida State in the tourney opener. Graham scored 11. BYU finished 9 of 11 from the line and was 23 of 28 in knocking off consecutiv­e ranked opponents.

The Cougars were without head coach Jeff Judkins, who did not make the trip after testing positive for COVID-19. The rest of the travel party was tested and given approval to compete with assistant coach Lee Cumard assuming the head coaching position.

Martinez scored 18 points for the Mountainee­rs (4-1) and Kirsten Deans had 17.

PURDUE 66

NO. 17 FLORIDA ST. 61

Cassidy Hardin made six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 18 points, Madison Layden added four 3-pointers and 16 points, and the Boilermake­rs held off the Seminoles at the St. Pete Showcase.

It was Purdue’s first win over a ranked team since 2019.

Ra Shaya Kyle had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Purdue (5-2). Jeanae Terry added eight points with 10 assists. Purdue was 12 of 33 from distance.

Kyle scored nine of her points in the fourth quarter, the last by spinning past her defender for a layup with 31 seconds left for a 64-61 lead. After a FSU miss under the basket, Layden was fouled and made two free throws at 23.3 seconds. FSU had two more looks on its next possession but couldn’t knock them down.

Morgan Jones had 14 points and seven rebounds for Florida State (4-2).

NO. 24 VIRGINIA TECH 54 TENNESSEE-MARTIN 49

Elizabeth Kitley had her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds and the Hokies defeated the Skyhawks at the San Juan Shootout

Kitley broke a tie at 42 to start the fourth quarter and Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run as UT Martin went four-plus minutes without scoring. The Skyhawks pulled within 50-49 with 1:16 left but Azana Baines

answered at the other end

and Kitley scored with 13 seconds to go.

NO. 9 ARIZONA 80 RUTGERS 44

Cate Reese scored 16 points and No. 9 Arizona cruised to an 80-44 victory over the Scarlet Knights in the Virgin Islands Paradise Jam at St. Thomas.

Gisela Sanchez added 15 points and Aaronette Vonleh had 12 points, both off the bench, for the Wildcats (6-0).

NO. 7 STANFORD 86 MARYLAND 67

Hannah Jump scored 21 points, hitting seven 3pointers, and Haley Jones added 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Cardinal over the Terrapins at the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championsh­ip at Nassau, Bahamas.

Leigha Brown scored a season-high 23 points, Naz Hillmon had her third straight double-double and Wolverines topped the Bulldogs at the Daytona Beach Invitation­al.

Jerkaila Jordan scored 18 points and Rickea Jackson 13 for the Bulldogs (6-0).
