DR. STUART A. TERRY

June 8, 1943

-

Our beloved Stuart passed away after many years of battling Alzheimer’s. Stuart was born in Chicago, Illinois to Nehemais “Hy” and Clara “Kay” Terry. For college, Stuart attended the University of Illinois. After graduating as valedictorian from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1968, Dr. Terry continued to distinguish himself both academically and professionally. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Military service brought Stuart and his young family to San Antonio, Texas where they settled down. While in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Terry pursued a career in research, teaching and clinical practice with interests in refractive surgery, cataract surgery and the treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Terry was distinguished as a VISX Star Surgeon, an honor given to the top five percent of refractive surgeons nationwide. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and in Cataract Surgery and LASIK by the American College of Eye Surgeons. Dr. Terry was a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He was the former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Stuart Terry was the Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Centers in San Antonio, Texas and a member of Braverman-Terry-Oei Eye Associates. Dr. Terry published numerous scientific papers, lectured to professional colleagues throughout the country, and conducted scientific research on the treatment of various eye conditions. Dr. Terry dedicated his career to helping the public achieve freedom from visual problems. Dr. Terry was recognized by his peers as one of “The Best Doctors In America” and has received the “Honor Award” from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Stuart was known and respected by his colleagues and loved by his numerous patients for over forty-three years. Dr. Terry touched so many lives by doing what he did best, i.e., treating and correcting people’s vision. Stuart was not defined by his professional career. Stuart dedicated himself to his family. He was selfless, always putting his family before himself. If one of his children asked him what he wanted for his birthday, his response would be “Do something nice for your mother; that will make me the happiest.” He was a very involved parent (and grandparent) attending all of the children’s athletic games and activities and going on wonderful vacations with each child individually and with the entire family. He was always available for support and to listen. He was 100% devoted to his wife of 56 years, Joanie; put her on a pedestal; and was always “there” for her. He was inquisitive, brilliant, loyal, empathetic, generous, honest, always kind, loved animals, and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed tennis, playing poker, skiing, socializing, movies, traveling with his family, spending time with his family at his lakehouse, fishing, Spurs basketball, watching his grandsons play basketball, and reading. Dr. Terry is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Joanie Yale; his two loving children and their spouses, Eric Terry (Jayne), and Kim Winbery (Ben); his two amazing grandsons, Cooper Yale Terry and Max Michael Terry who loved him as “Pop”; his niece, Wendy Rohr (Steve); and his sister-inlaw Essie Streicher (Rick) and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed and long remembered. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your own choosing.
