ANGELITA RUIZ CASTRO

April 21, 1943 - September 10, 2021

-

Our loving sister, aunt, and friend, Angelita Ruiz Castro, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021.

Angelita (“Angie”) was born on April 21, 1943, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and moved to San Antonio, TX, in the late 50’s with her family. She grew up in the San Juan community along with her younger siblings. She graduated from Luther Burbank High School in 1961. During her time at Burbank, she worked parttime at Handy Andy and after graduation, she worked for various employers including as one of the last elevator attendants at the Tower Life building. After marriage in 1968, Angie, worked at Santa Rosa medical hospital in downtown San Antonio. She then worked at Fiserv Inc. (formerly CPC Financial Services) as a key punch supervisor from the early seventies through the early 1990’s. After, she worked as an accounting clerk with the Express-News until 2008, when she retired. After the passing of her mother, Francisca, in 1992, Angie assumed the role of family matriarch. She took great pride in caring for her family, neighbors, and friends. Angie had such a big heart and loved sharing her life with those around her.

Throughout her life, Angie had many accomplishments. In 1995, she achieved one of her greatest accomplishments by becoming a naturalized United States citizen. Although proud of her Mexican roots, receiving her citizenship was the completion of a lifelong dream.

Angie enjoyed being creative and channeled her creativity into arts and crafts. She began to arrange flowers, create wreaths, and make bows. On occasion, her work was commissioned by family and friends for functions and décor.

Angie loved good food, a good movie, and good stories. In her later years, she would reminisce and tell stories of family and friends. She had a propensity to remember the slightest detail and to give an account of a past event from years before like if it was yesterday. Unfortunately, in June of 2016, Angie suffered from a mild stroke and in 2018, she moved to North Carolina to live with her niece, Valerie Wilkerson. During her years there, she traveled to the Appalachian Mountains, Tennessee, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. She spent the last years of her life surrounded by family and her furry friends. She will be greatly missed.

Angie is proceeded in death by her parents, father, Antonio Ruiz; mother, Francisca Vela Lozano and stepfather, Gilberto D. Lozano. Her siblings; brother, Gilberto Lozano Jr.; sisters, Sylvia F. Smith, Rosalinda V. Lozano, and Alicia Ruiz.

Angie is survived by her brother, Marcus Ernesto Lozano; nephew, Antonio Smith, and wife Andrea; niece, Valerie Ann Smith Wilkerson, and husband Travis; grandniece, Alyshia Marie Smith, and husband Barrett; stepsisters, and stepbrothers, and cousins.

There will be a brief graveside memorial held at 12PM on Monday December 27th, 2021, at San Jose Burial Park, 8235

In lieu of flowers, the family asks individuals to donate to their favorite charity or to one of Angie’s favorite charities listed below:
