San Antonio Express-News (Sunday)
The A-List
1. Concert
The East L.A. band La Santa Cecilia quickly became a San Antonio favorite after its first San Antonio show in 2011 at
The Mix on the St. Mary’s
Strip. It won over fans with its mix of retro-pop style, regional Mexican music, progressive politics and singer Marisol Hernandez’s undeniable stage presence.
7 p.m. Wednesday, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. St Mary’s St. $28, papertigersatx.com.
2. Classical music
The striking Musicians of the San Antonio Symphony, once again performing independently of the orchestra, will play works by Beethoven, Mozart and Skoryk. Former music director Sebastian Lang-Lessing conducts. In fact, it was his choice to conduct these concerts that prompted the San Antonio Symphony to fire Lang-Lessing as music director emeritus.
7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, First Baptist Church, 515 McCullough Ave. $20, mosas.org.
3. Album
Texas treasure Lyle Lovett has not released an album in a decade, so it’s fair to say the arrival of “The 12th of June” isa big deal. The new album features original songs and standards such as “Peel Me a Grape.”
Available on Friday.
4. Movie
“Firestarter” is a remake of the 1984 movie based on Stephen King’s novel, a sci-fi thriller about a little girl whose pyrokinetic powers put everyone around her in danger. Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who appeared in the most recent chapter of “American Horror Story,” stars in the role originated by Drew Barrymore.
Opens Friday in theaters.
5. Festival
Taco Fest: Music y Más returns with a music lineup topped by Mexican rock band Kinky and conjunto ace Santiago Jimenez Jr. More than two dozen restaurants, taquerías and food trucks, including Chela’s, Patty’s Taco House and Mr. Meximum will be participating, and all will offer at least one $2 taco. Noon-11 p.m. Saturday, Travis Park, 301 E. Travis St. $20 (VIP package available), tacocapitaloftheworld.
