SAMUEL SIDNEY WHITE
Samuel Sidney White passed away on April 30, 2022 at the age of 84 peacefully in San Antonio, TX. Sam was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor to many.
Sam was born in Dallas, Texas on December 6, 1937, to Sidney C. White and Helen D. White. He graduated from Mesquite High School in 1956 and began education at the University of North Texas. After one year, he transferred to the University of Texas in Austin, where he met his wife, Jane Ann McElvy. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and graduated with B.S. in Architectural Engineering in 1962.
Sam graduated from the U. S. Navy Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I., in 1963. He was then assigned to Air Transport Squadron 7 VR-7 at Naval Air Station Moffett Field in California operating C-130 aircraft to various destinations including Japan and Southeast Asia, and Vietnam.

Returning to Texas in 1966, he received of the SEAoT Distinguished worked for several structural Service Award. engineering firms, and taught structural engineering at the University of Houston and then later returned to Austin to pursue a master’s degree in Engineering. In 1977, Sam and his family moved to Houston, where he worked for CRS and Ellisor & Tanner Engineers. In 1981 he joined Haynes Whaley and Associates becoming a Vice President for 18 years. Some of his most notable, award-winning projects included The Shepherd School of Music and the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice, the Moores School of Music at the U of H, and The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, in addition to numerous high-rise buildings in downtown Houston.
Sam helped establishment of the Houston Chapter of Structural Engineering Association of Texas where he served as its first President and on the state board. Through his leadership, Sam established the SEAoT Hall of Honor and in 2009, he
In 1999, he retired and moved to the Texas Hill Country in Wimberley, TX. He established his own consulting firm, SWStructural, Inc.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Ann (McElvy) White; his son Samuel McElvy “Mac” White and wife Heidi of San Antonio, TX and his two granddaughters Claire White and Ella White; and his daughter Sydnee White and wife Penny of Houston, TX.
Sam is preceded in death by his father, Sidney Clarke White, Jr. mother, Helen White and sister Nancy Dennis.
A “Celebration of Life & Memorial Service” will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, TX. This will be followed by a military honor service at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:15 PM. Thereafter or in lieu of flowers, memorial donations
