The Human Bean, an Oregon-based national coffee franchise, is set to open its first San Antonio location this summer along Bulverde Road on the far North Side, according to a news release. A comment on a post on the new store’s Facebook page indicated it could open before the end of this month and the store is hiring staff now.

The shop specializes in coffee-based drinks such as the Mexi Mocha, made with dark cocoa, brown sugar, cinnamon and other spices, and the Irish Cream Breve, made with Irish cream flavoring, espresso and frothed half-and-half. The Human Bean also offers teas, smoothies, holiday-themed beverages and more.

The Human Bean began as a drive-thru espresso stand in Ashland, Ore., in 1998. The brand’s drive-thru-only model of stores has since expanded to more than 300 locations open or in development in 25 states.

Last year, The Human Bean was listed as one of the Top 25 fastest-growing restaurant chains in the country by the trade publication Nation’s Restaurant News.

The new San Antonio franchise is owned by Rodney Fischer and Kirk Brumley, and will open simultaneously with a Fischer’s Neighborhood Market convenience store on the same lot.

The Human Bean’s website, thehumanbean.com, lists three more locations as coming soon to the area: one on the West Side near SeaWorld San Antonio, along FM 78 on the Northeast Side and in Gruene.

A spokesperson for The Human Bean did not immediately reply to a phone call or an email about opening dates or to determine ownership of those other three locations.
