In a journey that’s taken several twists and turns over the past decade, Künstler Brewing co-owners Vera and Brent Deckard have finally come full circle.

The two opened their longawaited Tap Haus to the public June 4 in the Pereida House at Hemisfair.

The couple had originally eyed the historic home as the potential flagship location for their brewery. But the structure, which dates to the mid-1880s, proved impossible for the equipment and alterations that would be required to install a brewery.

The Deckards eventually opened Künstler in 2017 in the Lone Star District, but their friendship with the Hemisfair management team never soured.

When the Hemisfair team began looking for businesses to take over the space, the Deckards signed on. They announced plans for the Tap Haus in late 2021 with the intention of opening the following summer, but permitting delays and other logistical challenges pushed that

target forward by a full year.

The petite, two-room house features a stylish wooden bar illuminated by dangling Edison

bulbs and a small dining room with table seating. The large back porch and patio provides additional seating

and easy access to the neighboring Yanaguana Garden.

“It feels fantastic to be here,” Vera Deckard said. “We love working with the Hemisfair group. They’ve been very supportive of us.”

Künstler Tap Haus is serving a pared-down version of the brewery’s regular menu with a focus on bratwursts, hot dogs and other easy-tocarry items for customers hoping to stroll through the park for a picnic.

The beer selection, which can be quite large and eclectic at the brewery, consists primarily of Künstler’s lighter, easy-drinking and lower alcohol content brews.

A small selection of cocktails featuring herbs grown at the brewery and wine also is available.

Künstler Tap Haus is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but Deckard said they plan to expand to daily operation in the coming weeks.
