Grace Louree Scrivener

-

Grace Louree Scrivener, of San Antonio, Texas died on June 2, 2023, of Alzheimer’s disease. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wendell and Rose Myers, sister, Esther Flora, and brother, Paul Myers.

Grace was born in Hastings, Nebraska on May 19, 1941. She attended schools in Oklahoma, including Acme School, where she played basketball, and Shawnee High School, where she acted in school plays. While attending Oklahoma Baptist University, she worked at the Campus Drug where she met her future husband, Tom Scrivener, when he accidentally knocked a cup of coffee on her. With such an auspicious beginning, it was no wonder that the two were married on June 30, 1962. She went on to earn her degree in History in 1964. After they were married and while living in Norman, Oklahoma, Grace taught junior high; Tom began his law school studies which were cut short when he was drafted into the Army.

Tom served two tours in Vietnam.

After Vietnam, Tom made a career in Army Aviation, and he and Grace relocated multiple times, including to Japan and South Korea. Grace continued to teach, both as a substitute and a full-time teacher. She taught in Texas, Kansas, Alabama, and especially loved her time teaching at Seoul American High School, where she was named Teacher of the Year. Her position in Seoul enabled her to travel to Taiwan as a chaperone for the basketball cheerleaders, which she spoke fondly of for many years.

May 19, 1941 - June 2, 2023

Grace loved to garden. While her efforts were recognized when she won Yard of the Month in Enterprise, Alabama, her avid gardening often caused her children to wander the large yard yelling, “MOM! Where are you?” While in Virginia, Grace created a garden that was the envy of her neighborhood, planting many beautiful flowers, including daffodils. Grace loved travel and especially embraced the Japanese and Korean cultures. She was a wonderful cook and learned to make several Japanese and Korean dishes, including the family favorite, tonkatsu. Grace was a loving mother to her children, a consummate wife, a gracious homemaker, and a caregiver to her family in their times of need. Grace loved dogs and was preceded in death by Puddin’, Bozo, Nancy, Duchess, Montie,

and Boscoe. She is survived by Nancy II.

Grace and Tom retired in San Antonio to be near their grandchildren. Grace adored being “Gran” and loved her grandchildren immensely. She cherished her three “grands,” Andrew, Meredith, and Ethan. An endlessly energetic and patient grandmother, Grace joyfully participated in countless “slumbovers,” tea parties, hair and makeup sessions, watery adventures, musical jam sessions, trips to the zoo, museums, and the nearby Dairy Queen; she never missed a birthday, family celebration, or school event. Grace was equally adored by her grandchildren who remember her as vibrant, adventurous, fun, and always loving.

Grace is survived by her husband, Tom; children, Laurie (Joe Soliz) of Norman, Oklahoma, and Greg (Joy) and grandchildren, Andrew, Meredith, and Ethan of San Antonio; her beloved sister-in-law, Ann Myers, and her nieces and nephews, Ginny Sain of St. Cloud, Florida; Holly Flora Meck of New Orleans, Louisiana; Ben Myers of Chandler, Oklahoma; Anna Maria Lane of Palm Bay, Florida; Wendy Flora of Stockholm, Sweden; Cody Flora of Shawnee, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Ann Harroun (Leon), and nephew and niece Thad and Leslie Harroun.

The family will receive friends June 14, 2023, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North, with burial the next morning, June 15, at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 10:15 a.m.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Haven in San Antonio and the caregivers at Vitas Hospice for their loving care of Grace during her final years.
