Greyhounds pile up 300 yards on the ground to win share of title

BOERNE — The lingering intrigue during Boerne’s 31-7 victory over Somerset that locked up at least a share of the District 14-4A-I championship is how the Greyhounds were going to divvy their embarrassment of riches at quarterback.

Junior Jaxon Baize, who passed for 5,000 and led Boerne to last year’s state title game made his first start since injuring his foot in the season opener. Then, there was freshman Hank Hendrix who filled in admirably in Baize’s place, passing for more than 1,400 yards.

“It was super-cool,” Baize said of Hank Hendrix. “That’s a freshman out there ballin’. He’s only 14 years old. It’s pretty crazy. It was fun to be able to help him out throughout it.”

And finally, junior Hutson Hendrix, the Greyhounds’ starting linebacker who plays quarterback in the wildcat formation.

“It opens up the playbook,” Baize said. “It’s super-tough to game plan against, for sure. It gives us so many options to do whichever one of us is in.”

The Greyhounds used all of them as they improved to 8-1 and 4-0 in district play.

Hutson Hendrix scored on three 1-yard runs behind the refurbished “Wall of Boerne” — the Greyhounds’ offensive line — that returned just one starter.

Senior running back TJ Dement scored on a 70-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and finished with 216 yards on 21 carries. The Greyhounds rolled up 300 rushing yards and 450 total.

Carson Cooper booted a 32yard field goal to close the scoring for Boerne, which sealed at least a tie for the district title. They can win it outright with a victory at Fredericksburg next week.

Baize threw for 129 yards and an interception on 8-of-15 passing. Hank Hendrix was 1 of 5 for nine yards.

The Greyhounds held Somerset to 118 total yards. Dylan Perez and McCoy Bruce each had an interception. Junior lineman Brayden Bays and senior lineman Trendon McCarter provided constant pressure on Somerset quarterback Koby Isbell.

“This helps prepare us for playoffs and helps set the tone,” McCarter said. “This is great for our team and great for the underclassmen to help them get ready. We just have to do this for our seniors to help them get back to the state ’ship.”

The Greyhounds never trailed after scoring on Dement’s 70-yarder.

“That’s helpful to start like that,” Baize said. “That gives us a huge burst of energy, gets the defense out there firing and just gets us going the rest of the night.”

Boerne added to it on Hutson Hendrix’s 1-yard run to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

Somerset cut it in half midway through the second with a 16play, 89-yard drive capped by Isbell’s 9-yard pass to Jaden Faz.

Boerne’s Cooper made a 32yard field goal that gave the Greyhounds a 17-7 halftime lead.

Hutson added two more 1-yard scores in the second half.
