Southwest junior outside hitter Addison Bartlett was outstanding in the Dragons’ biggest match of the season to this point, and her efforts earned her
Express-News Athlete of the Week honors.
In a five-set thriller, Bartlett put together a triple-double — 29 kills, 13 assists, 11 digs — to go along with three blocks and two aces in leading Southwest to a big win over Harlandale last week. The victory clinched the District 28-5A Championship and the district’s top playoff seed for the Dragons.
Since then, Southwest closed out the regular season with a sweep of rival Southwest Legacy, giving the Dragons a 15-match win streak as they head to the playoffs. Southwest opens postseason play with a match against Edison at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Alamo Convocation Center.
Bartlett’s stellar performance against Harlandale earned her volleyball player of the week honors Monday, and Dragons fans took it from there, casting 373 votes in the weekly Express-News Athlete of the Week poll. Bartlett edged out junior classmate Tyson Deen, who finished second in the poll with 163 votes.
Deen, a junior on Southwest’s football team, earned defensive player of the week honors after recording 13 tackles and scoring three total touchdowns, one in each phase of the game, in a 35-7 win over South San last week.
Deen amassed 277 all-purpose yards, scoring on a fumble return, a kickoff return and a rushing touchdown.
Roosevelt’s Brennan Carroll was the third finalist for Athlete of the Week as the running back was named offensive player of the week after he rushed for 285 yards and four touchdowns and added a 49-yard touchdown catch in a
36-21 win over Clark.
