Aggies cruise in Robinson’s debut

- By Brent Zwerneman

COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M cranked up the Elijah Robinson era with a lurch and then a burst in an occasionallyplodding 38-10 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon at Kyle Field.

The Wildcats grabbed their lone lead on A&M’s first offensive possession when ACU linebacker Cirby Coheley returned what was ruled a fumble by A&M quarterback Jaylen Henderson 49 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game.

Henderson was hit on the play by ACU linebacker Reese Young and the ball popped loose. Coheley snagged the errant pop-up and scrambled nearly half the field for the score against the stunned Aggies. The play was ruled a fumble because Henderson’s arm was not moving forward when he was hit.

A&M responded less than three minutes later on a 7-yard Rueben Owens touchdown run, and the rout was on for the Aggies against their overmatched Western Athletic Conference opponent.

The Aggies added scores on a 34-yard Randy Bond field goal, a 13-yard touchdown catch by Noah Thomas, a 49-yard touchdown catch by Moose Muhammad III, a 3-yard touchdown run by David Bailey and a 13yard touchdown catch by Jaden Platt from backup quarterback Marcel Reed.

ACU wraps up its season at 5-6 and 3-3 in the WAC. The Aggies (7-4, 4-3 SEC) turn their attention to rival LSU in the regular season finale on Saturday morning in Baton Rouge, La.

A&M fired coach Jimbo Fisher last week after the Aggies were 11-11 under the former Florida State coach over the past two seasons, and promoted Robinson from defensive line coach to interim coach.

Robinson will lead the Aggies against LSU and in a bowl game, and he also is a candidate to take over the full-time job, along with UTSA’s Jeff Traylor among others. Running back Le’Veon Moss and receiver Evan Stewart returned to action for the Aggies after missing the two previous games with injuries.
