Sangria on the Burg is closing at year’s end

- By Mike Sutter

After seven years of creative sliders, tacos and sangria flights in the Medical Center area, Sangria on the Burg is closing at the end of the year, owner Ceasar Zepeda announced on social media Dec. 4.

“It’s with many emotions we announce the closing of Sangria on the Burg on Dec. 31,” the post said. “Rising costs and declining sales is a hard combination for business to survive. We are proud to have been a part of San Antonio’s culinary community.”

Zepeda, a San Antonio restaurant lifer whose résumé includes La Fonda on Main and Ácenar, opened Sangria on the Burg in 2016 on a stretch of Fredericksburg Road that embraces a global array of cuisines and cultures, including Indian from Madurai Mes, Pakistani from Fusion Food, barbecue from Old Smokehouse and American bar standards from Oak Hills Tavern.

Sangria on the Burg built an identity of its own with glazed pork belly, Buffalo chicken, crunchy fish and smoked brisket that fed an expansive menu of tacos, sliders and salads. The sangria side made its own splash, infused with pineapple, grapefruit, ginger, Southern Comfort, Irish whiskey and even Big Red.

The restaurant made headlines of its own, making the Express-News’ Top 100 Dining & Drinks guide several years in a row and landing Zepeda a place on renegade chef Guy Fieri’s “Guy’s Grocery Games.”

Sangria on the Burg’s last service will happen Dec. 31, but Zepeda asked supporters and fans for one more favor: “Please come out and support us again through another visit or a catering through Dec. 31. Help us give our staff one last month together and some financial support through the holiday season.”
