ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Clemens junior Tessara Harrison flummoxed pitchers throughout the softball season’s opening week, batting .632 with nine extra-base hits in six games.

Harrison belted two home runs to go along with four triples, three doubles, 17 RBIs and eight runs scored as the Buffaloes went 6-0, including a 5-0 showing at the Northside ISD tournament. Her offensive fireworks dazzled voters in this week’s poll as she was named ExpressNews Athlete of the Week.

Harrison was named softball player of the week Monday, and Clemens fans helped her edge out six other finalists with 227 votes.

Clemens junior Joshua Jackson was named the boys track and field athlete of the week, while Stevens junior Kalia Abernathy nabbed girls track and field athlete of the week honors.

Jackson led the South San Relays with 30 total points, winning the 100 meters (10.90 seconds) and long jump (22 feet, 2 1⁄4 inches) and ran on the 4x100 relay (42.84) and 4x200 relay (1:28.65). Abernathy won five gold medals at the Alamo Heights Invitational, coming out on top in the long jump (17-8), triple jump (35-7) and 200 (26.63) and running anchor in wins in the 4x100 relay (50.46) and 4x200 relay (1:49.18).

Jay senior Delahmu Reeves and Steele sophomore Londyn Johnson were the boys and girls soccer players of the week, respectively. Reeves netted a hat trick in the Mustangs’ 3-2 win over Taft. Johnson scored five goals and added an assist in the Knights’ 6-0 win over East Central, and she assisted on the lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Judson.

Lytle senior Calyssa Sevier and Brennan junior Kingston Flemings were the girls and boys basketball players of the week, respectively. Sevier, the area’s leading scorer, buried a game-winning 3-pointer with 15.9 seconds left in the Pirates’ 66-65 playoff win over Edna. She finished with 40 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Flemings scored 30 points and had 10 rebounds and three assists in Brennan’s 98-63 playoff win over Jay.
