ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

- Jeff Perkins

Another gem from Brandeis pitcher Matt McClenan and a stellar week at the plate helped the sophomore surge to Express-News Athlete of the Week honors.

McClenan tossed a no-hitter and struck out 10 batters to lead the Broncos over LEE last week and went 10-for-20 at the plate with a home run and seven RBIs in six games.

The strong performance earned him baseball player of the week honors, and Brandeis fans cast 541 votes to help him beat out five other finalists in this week’s Athlete of the Week poll.

New Braunfels freshman Savanah Moya, the girls track and field athlete of the week, finished second in the poll with 325 votes. Moya won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Smithson Valley Ranger Relays, clocking 5 minutes, 9.73 seconds in the 1,600 and 11:19.83 in the 3,200.

Antonian senior Esther Martinez was named softball player of the week and finished third in the poll with 194 votes. She hit .611 with three home runs and nine RBIs to help the Apaches go 5-1 at the Judson/East Central tournament. She also went 2-0 with 17 strikeouts in the circle.

Other finalists included Smithson Valley senior Jaxson Maynard, who was the boys track and field athlete of the week, as well as LEE senior Kendall Jones and Johnson senior Diego Robles, the girls and boys soccer players of the week, respectively.

Maynard won the discus at the Smithson Valley Ranger Relays with a throw of 170 feet, 1 inch.

Jones set the tone defensively for the Volunteers in shutouts of Clark (1-0) and Reagan (0-0) as LEE clinched a playoff spot. She scored the game-winning goal against Clark off a corner kick and scored another goal in a 5-2 win over Marshall.

Robles scored two goals to go with one assist in the Jaguars’ 4-0 win over Clark.
