On October 28 of last year, San Antonio lost one of its endearing sons, Dr. William E. Wellborn, born here in the city on February 2, 1956, to Patsy Chambers Wellborn and H. E. (Gene) Wellborn both also of San Antonio. He passed away at UCSF Parnassus Hospital in

San Francisco after a long and heroic battle against cancer.

As an accomplish­ed pianist, educator, and lecturer, Bill began his music studies with piano lessons - then oboe and flute when he joined the Robert E Lee High School Band. Focusing on piano he went on to earn degrees BA and DMA from the University of Texas Austin and MM from New England

Conservtor­y of Music. He performed and taught at concerts, recitals, festivals, master classes and other venues across the USA and Europe. He was frequently called upon as a master class teacher, guest artist, convention artist, and competitio­n adjudicato­r. Bill’s true passion was teaching. He taught piano at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Humbolt State University, in California before joining the faculty of the San Francisco Conservato­ry of Music in the Fall of 1989 where he taught for the next 34 years until his passing. Many of his students have won numerous local and national competitio­ns. In 2017

Bill received a Life Time Achievemen­t Award from the California Associatio­n of Profession­al Music Teachers(CAPMT}.With colleagues and friends he shared his love of music, records, classic cinema, good food, wine, champagne, and chocolate.

Bill was charming, witty, intelligen­t, loyal, kind and great fun to be with. He was preceeded in death by his father Gene. Bill is survived by his mother

Patsy, cousin Linelle and husband James, countless students, colleagues and friends whose life he has changed forever.

Never forgetting his roots, he performed here occasional­ly and often returned to visit family and friends. Truly one of San Antonio’s brightest stars, his friends and family here feel the significan­t loss of his passing.
