ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

- Jeff Perkins

Seguin junior Nikolas Henry timed a blazing 10.67 seconds in the boys 100 meters at the Canyon Cougar Relays last week, sprinting his way to Express-News Athlete of the Week honors.

Henry’s time is the second-fastest in the area this season, and he is one of only six sprinters from the San Antonio area to clock under 11 seconds this year. Last week, he also ran the second leg on the

Matadors’ 4x400 relay team, which set a meet record with a time of 41.63 seconds. Henry’s performance earned him Express-News boys track and field athlete of the week honors Monday, and he beat out five other finalists in the weekly poll, garnering 128 votes to be named Athlete of the Week.

Henry’s track and field athlete of the week counterpart, Randolph junior Taylor Nunez, also competed at the Canyon Cougar Relays, where she set meet records in the girls long jump (19 feet 83⁄4 inches) and 200 meters (23.49 seconds). She also won the 100 in 11.64 seconds and anchored the Ro-Hawks’ second-place 4x400 relay team (3:57.67). Her performances in the individual events are each the top marks among area women’s athletes.

Jefferson senior Angel Vasquez scored four goals and added two assists in a 9-2 win over Brackenridge last week, earning him boys soccer player of the week honors. O’Connor junior Ella Hammonds, the girls soccer player of the week, netted a hat trick with two assists in the Panthers’ 5-1 win over Stevens. O’Connor locked up a playoff spot with the victory.

Alamo Heights senior Clairee Embrey was stellar in the circle last week, going the distance in a 9-inning game against Burbank.

She had 17 strikeouts and didn’t allow an earned run in a 4-3 win and also had seven strikeouts in three innings in an 11-0 run-rule victory over

Highlands, earning her softball player of the week.

In five games at the Comal ISD tournament last week, Medina Valley senior Wesley Stephens went 9 for 15 with two home runs, two doubles, nine RBIs and two stolen bases. His 1.067 slugging percentage and 1.655 OPS over that span helped him earn baseball player of the week honors.
