UTSA’s Ivy-Curry, Tucker in transfer portal

Within two days of the announceme­nt that UTSA coach Steve Henson will not be renewed for the 2024-25 season, Roadrunner­s leading scorers Jordan Ivy-Curry and Christian Tucker entered the transfer portal, sharing their moves on social media.

Returning for a third season at UTSA following a year at Pacific, IvyCurry averaged a teambest 17.1 points per game, appearing in 21 contests off the bench after being deemed eligible in December. He also ranked second on the team with 3 assists per game and was third among Roadrunner­s in rebounding with 5.2 per game.

Ivy-Curry was UTSA’s most proficient 3-point shooter, as well, averaging 2.2 per game at a 38.7% rate.

Tucker emerged as a regular starter at point guard last season after two quiet years in the program, averaging 11.2 points and an American Athletic Conference­leading 5.5 assists per game.

The Roadrunner­s wrapped up a third straight losing season Wednesday, finishing 11-21 after a first-round loss as the bottom seed in the AAC tournament.

The next day, UTSA athletic director Lisa Campos announced that eighth-year coach Steve Henson will not have his contract renewed following its expiration March 31.

Cloud advances at Golden Gloves

Super heavyweigh­t Lawrence Cloud became the only San Antonio boxer to advance to the finals of the Texas State Golden Gloves tournament, thanks to a splitdecis­ion semifinal victory over Jesse Jombo of Fort Worth.

Two other San Antonio boxers lost their semifinal matches. Santiago Vasquez lost to Jose Magana of El Paso at 125 pounds, while Jarius Sealy lost by decision to Steve Soundia Wato of Houston at 176.

Duran receiving medical care for heart problem:

Boxing great Roberto Duran was receiving medical care for a heart problem, the family of the 72-year-old Panamanian said Saturday.

Duran, who was a champion in four different weight classes, “has suffered a health complicati­on due to an atrioventr­icular blockade,” his family said in a statement.

“We are waiting for results so that we can provide more informatio­n on his health,” the statement continued.

Mikaela Shiffrin capped her campaign that was marred by a recent six-week injury layoff with her recordexte­nding 60th win in slalom and 97th overall at the World Cup finals Saturday at SaalbachHi­nterland, Austria.

Sakkari outlasts Gauff at Paribas

Maria Sakkari outlasted Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 after blowing three match points in the second set of their raindelaye­d semifinal at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

Sakkari advanced to Sunday’s final against top-ranked Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek routed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 6-2, 6-1 in the other semi.
