Toyota offers SUVs for all needs

- By G. Chambers Williams III

Toyota’s iconic Land Cruiser sport-utility vehicle returns to the lineup for 2024 after a brief hiatus, joining a full stable of trucks and utility vehicles that can handle any chore that consumers have in mind.

Trucks include the full-size Tundra and midsize Tacoma pickups, while traditional SUVs from Toyota also include the classic midsize 4Runner and full-size Sequoia.

Crossover utilities in the lineup for 2024 are plentiful, and can fulfill the needs of any family size. From smallest to largest, they include the Corolla Cross, bZ4X battery-electric vehicle, RAV4 compact, midsize Highlander, the new three-row Grand Highlander, and the midsize hybridonly Venza.

Coming this summer for 2025 will be the Crown Signia midsize fivepassenger crossover, based on the new Crown sedan model.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Toyota says the all-new 2024 Land Cruiser will remain “true to its roots as an extremely capable off-roader, packed with premium features, and now at a more accessible price,” starting at $55,950.

It will be offered only with a hybrid drive system, and comes with new styling, loads of up-to-date technology, and the most-capable offroad features.

All versions will come with the turbocharged i-Force Max hybrid powertrain, with full-time four-wheel drive. The combination of a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbo engine and electric motors will provide 326 horsepower and 465 foot-pounds of torque.

Power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new Land Cruiser has an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined fuel-economy rating, the best in the history of this vehicle, which was originally introduced for 1958.

The Land Cruiser is built on Toyota’s global truck platform, shared with the Tundra, Sequoia and Tacoma. Attributes are refined handling, premium comfort and improved capability. Its high-strength boxed frame means that Land Cruiser is ready to tackle even the harshest of environments, Toyota says, and can tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Toyota 4Runner

4Runner, one of a few remaining true body-on-frame sport utilities, continues to offer the TRD Pro V-6 model at the top of the line, designed with trail driving in mind.

Now in its fifth generation, the 4Runner dates to 1984, but today’s version is so much more advanced that it’s pretty much the standardbearer among family-friendly

SUVs when it’s in the off-road environment.

Updates to the 4Runner last year included the Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, along with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS-P) system, standard on all grades.

Also included are special black 17-inch TRD “flow-form” Matte Black alloy wheels carrying Nitto Terra Grappler all-terrain tires. Toyota says this wheel design allows for “unique adjustments in other areas to increase ride comfort, handling and performance, specifically shock absorber tuning.”

That leads to another key feature on this model: 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks for the TRD Pro, designed to accommodate off-road driving while also providing highspeed highway performance. They come with remote reservoirs to give maximum suspension damping on rugged terrain.

These upgrades help continue the TRD Pro’s reputation as the most off-road-capable 4Runner available.

Toyota RAV4

Toyota’s popular RAV4 compact crossover now comes in hybrid-electric versions. The hybrid models joined the lineup as the RAV4 entered its newest generation five years ago, with a redesign that made it lower
