McCollum’s Alita Uresti has scored goals at a torrid pace this season, and she turned it up a notch in the regular season finale against Harlandale, earning her Express-News Athlete of the Week honors.

Uresti scored all five of McCollum’s goals against Harlandale, leading the Cowgirls to a 5-1 win last week and pushing her season total to 45 goals. McCollum finished third in

District 28-5A but was held in check against MacArthur in a 4-1 loss in their bi-district game Tuesday.

Despite the loss, Uresti finished the season averaging 1.96 goals per game, among the best marks in the area, and her performanc­e against

Harlandale earned her Express-News girls soccer player of the week honors. McCollum fans took over from there, casting 452 votes in the Athlete of the Week poll.

Uresti garnered 27.7% of the 1,628 total votes, edging out five other finalists across other spring sports.

Harlandale junior Jared Garcia, the boys soccer player of the week, earned 321 votes and narrowly topped Clemens junior Joshua Jackson, the boys track athlete of the week, for second place. Jackson had 301 votes.

Garcia scored five goals in the Harlandale boys’ 9-1 win over McCollum, while Jackson set a North East ISD Invitation­al record in the long jump with a mark of 24 feet, 1 inches. He also won the 100 meters in 10.97 seconds.

Quintero were the other three finalists.

Boston was named girls track and field athlete of the week following her high-point performanc­e at the Seguin Matador Relays. She set a school record with a leap of 18 feet, 9 inches in the long jump, while also winning the triple jump (39-5 and running a leg on the Knights’ winning 4x200 relay (1:43.80).

Mulkey, the baseball player of the week, went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and four runs scored in a 13-3 win over Fredericks­burg.

Quintero hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning, helping Harlan to a 2-0 win over Brennan. She also went 3-for-3 with a grand slam in a 6-2 win over Taft, earning her softball player of the week.
