An obscure gem
“Daughters of the Dust,” director Julie Dash’s groundbreaking drama set in a Gullah community, is one of the must-sees of Cinema Tuesdays, Texas Public Radio’s summer film series. It follows a family of former slaves and their descendants as they prepare to move from the Sea Islands to the U.S. mainland, where some fear they will lose their connection to their African homeland. When a restored version of the 1991 movie was released to celebrate its 25th anniversary, New Yorker critic Richard Brody declared it the “best and most original movie” of 2016. 7:30 p.m. today, Santikos Bijou theater, Wonderland of the Americas, 4522 Fredericksburg Road. $15 ($10 for Texas Public Radio members). tpr.org
