Grundy out; ’Runners likely to shuffle QBs
UTSA has used multiple quarterbacks in almost every game this season, but coach Frank Wilson doesn’t want that to be viewed as a sign of uncertainty.
Junior Cordale Grundy, freshman Jordan “JoJo” Weeks and senior D.J. Gillins have all played, with Matt Guidry taking direct snaps in a wildcat formation. But Wilson said the moves represent an effort to protect a freshman in Weeks and give the Roadrunners the best chance to win rather than a desperate search for answers.
“You take a young guy, and you give him opportunities to do what he does well,” Wilson said. “You don’t leave him hanging out there. You nurture him, you develop him and you put him in positions to have success.”
With Grundy sidelined because of injury, Wilson said Weeks and Gillins were competing this week to be the starter as UTSA hosts Florida International at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Alamodome.
Wilson hasn’t ruled out the possibility of both playing as the Roadrunners look to boost a passing attack that ranks last in the FBS at 4.4 yards per attempt.
“At quarterback, you have to have the guy in situations, in college football, that give you a chance to win the game,” Wilson said. “It’s been done forever, whether it’s been (Florida’s) Chris Leak and Tim Tebow in short yardage, it doesn't matter. You put those kids in positions where their skill sets are able to be elevated. We’ll continue to do that at the quarterback position,
and at every position.”
Grundy, who started the first seven games, has thrown for 989 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Weeks has started the past two games, amassing 236 yards and a TD. Gillins has thrown for 118 yards with a score and an interception, entering off the bench in four games.
