Russell Armand Smith died October 4, 2018 at the age of 91 in West Orange, New Jersey. He was born on May 29, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas to Yale Smith, Sr. and Rhea Du Cote’ Smith. A 4th generation Texan who’s Great Grandfathe­r Capt. Dan P. Smith was a road building contractor and built many of the sidewalks now in downtown San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his love of 35 years Hilda Jacobs who died in 2001. He is survived by his brother Yale Smith, Jr., Houston, Texas, niece, Cara E. Smith, Beverly, Massachuse­tts and nephew Roark A. Smith, Houston, Texas. He became interested in the various elements of chemistry in his early teens and eventually received a degree in chemistry from The University of Texas. He began his career as a Scientist Assistant with M. D. Andersen Hospital, Houston, Texas. He later spent several years working on Government protects as an Associate Professor at New York University. He also was employed with a number of chemical companies in New Jersey before retiring. Chess was his game and enjoyed as many have over the years playing in New York City’s Washington Square with anyone who would dare. He was an avid student of classical music and the fine arts. As a second career he could easily have become a teacher of either. He spent many hours in his later years always with a book he was reading.
