Bailiff returns as D-II head coach
Former Rice coach and MacArthur graduate David Bailiff has been hired to coach at Division II Texas A&M-Commerce. Colby Carthel, who led the Lions to the 2017 Division II national championship, last week became the coach at FCS team Stephen F. Austin.
Bailiff was Rice’s coach for 11 seasons until he was fired after the Owls went 1-11 in 2017. He was Texas State’s coach from 2004-06 before going to Rice, where he had two 10-win seasons and twice was the Conference USA coach of the year. The Owls in 2013 won their first outright conference title in 56 years.
Murray apologizes: Newly minted Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray is apologizing for antigay tweets posted to his Twitter account, when he was 14 and 15.
The Oklahoma quarterback tweeted : “I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15. I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.”
Elsewhere: Jim Harbaugh insisted he is staying at Michigan to coach, responding to speculation he is returning to the NFL. The former San Francisco 49ers coach told ESPN he is not going anywhere. … Iowa State and coach Matt Campbell have agreed to a contract extension through 2024, a sign that one of the hottest names in the annual coaching carousel is staying put.
