Bailiff returns as D-II head coach

Former Rice coach and MacArthur graduate David Bailiff has been hired to coach at Division II Texas A&M-Commerce. Colby Carthel, who led the Lions to the 2017 Division II national championsh­ip, last week became the coach at FCS team Stephen F. Austin.

Bailiff was Rice’s coach for 11 seasons until he was fired after the Owls went 1-11 in 2017. He was Texas State’s coach from 2004-06 before going to Rice, where he had two 10-win seasons and twice was the Conference USA coach of the year. The Owls in 2013 won their first outright conference title in 56 years.

Murray apologizes: Newly minted Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray is apologizin­g for antigay tweets posted to his Twitter account, when he was 14 and 15.

The Oklahoma quarterbac­k tweeted : “I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15. I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.”

Elsewhere: Jim Harbaugh insisted he is staying at Michigan to coach, responding to speculatio­n he is returning to the NFL. The former San Francisco 49ers coach told ESPN he is not going anywhere. … Iowa State and coach Matt Campbell have agreed to a contract extension through 2024, a sign that one of the hottest names in the annual coaching carousel is staying put.
