The Gap is closing one of its local stores, several new restaurants recently opened their doors, and people can watch Lego lovers duke it out for a job at San Antonio’s Legoland Discovery Center this weekend.

Opening, closing

SouthPaw Waggery ,a pet boutique in downtown San Antonio, is holding a grand opening this weekend. The shop at 317 Lexington Ave. will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to-

day and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

A fitness studio called Alfa Fitness opens today. The studio at 3800 NW Loop 410 will offer Zumba and TrampoLean classes. The grand opening starts at noon.

The Gap store at Huebner Oaks Center is closing, and customers have until Jan. 28 to snag discounted items.

“We always evaluate our store fleet to ensure we have the right stores in the right locations to best serve our customers’ needs,” the company said in a statement. “The decision to close a store is always a difficult

one and we hope our customers will continue to shop with us at nearby stores or online.”

New grub

A beer garden on the South Side is holding a grand opening today starting at noon. The Aquaduck Beer Garden, 9214 Espada Road, offers beer, wine and specialty drinks. The event includes “fun, food, live music, and frosty beverages all day,” according to Facebook.

Zero Degrees opened a second San Antonio location this week at 18010 Bulverde Road. The franchise specializes in food that fuses Asian and Hispanic influences. It opened its first local restaurant at 6903 Blanco Road last year.

Eastside Kitchenette ,a highly anticipated Southern restaurant, also opened this week in Government Hill.

Dream job

Legoland Discovery Center, slated to open at the Shops at Rivercenter mall this spring, is looking to hire a master model builder.

Among other responsibilities, the full-time position entails building Lego models, designing and installing displays, and putting on “fun, inspirational and creative model builder workshops,” according to a job description.

This weekend, applicants will compete in three building challenges to earn the job, and spectators can

watch for free. The event — in the corridor by H&M and Starbucks — runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from noon till 2 p.m. Sunday, when the winner will be chosen.

Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp., a real-estate investment firm that owns the mall, is partnering with leisure company Merlin Entertainments to open Legoland and the Sea Life Aquarium. The attractions will take up a combined 65,000 square feet at the mall and are scheduled to open in May.

Fight pirates

You and your shipmates can battle marauding pirates in a new ride opening this weekend at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The ride, called Pirates of the Deep Sea, is scheduled to launch today.

“As they float past the eerie remains of ghost ships, riders are caught in the middle of a dramatic battle between their pirate ship and an angry mob of pirates portside,” Six Flags said in a news release. “Riders will need to be quick on the trigger to blow the man down and defeat the swashbuckling scalawags.”

Those who come in their best pirate costume can get into the park for $20.19, according to Six Flags’ website.
