Betts, deGrom, Davis get one-year contracts
American League MVP Mookie Betts, National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom and major league home run champion Khris Davis reached highpriced one-year deals on Friday to avoid salary arbitration, while slugger Nolan Arenado failed to reach agreement.
Betts and the World Series champion Boston Red Sox agreed to a $20 million, one-year contract, a $9.5 million raise for an arbitration-eligible player that topped pitcher Max Scherzer’s $8.8 million raise from Detroit in 2014.
Betts’ record didn’t last the day, broken when deGrom and the New York Mets agreed at $17 million, a $9.6 million increase.
Davis and the Athletics reached a $16.5 million deal, a $6 million raise after he hit 48 home runs with a career-high 123 RBIs.
Arenado asked for a record $30 million in arbitration from Colorado and was offered $24 million. He will top the record for a salary for an arbitration-eligible player, a $23 million deal last year by Toronto’s Josh Donaldson.
Among the 157 players eligible at the start of the day, just 15 remained without deals.
Martin to Dodgers: The Dodgers reacquired catcher Russell Martin in a trade with Toronto, and also reached one-year deals with their seven remaining arbitration-eligible players. They are Corey Seager, Joc Pederson, Chris Taylor, Enrique Hernandez, Pedro Baez, Josh Fields and Yimi Garcia.
In exchange for Martin, the Dodgers sent minor leaguers Andrew Sopko, a righthander, and Ronny Brito, an infielder, to the Blue Jays. Toronto is sending $16.4 million to offset some of the $20 million Martin is owed.
A four-time All-Star, Martin was with the Dodgers from 2006-10.
Britton, Yankees agree: Zach Britton and the Yankees have finalized a contract that guarantees the reliever $39 million over three seasons and could be worth $53 million for four years.
The Yankees also signed threetime Gold Glove second baseman D.J. LeMahieu to a two-year contract. The move is pending a physical and is reportedly worth $24 million.
