Syracuse upsets Duke; Baylor edges OSU

DURHAM, N.C. — Tyus Battle scored a season-high 32 points, and Syracuse used its 2-3 zone defense to rattle No. 1 Duke in overtime as the Orange pulled off the upset, 95-91 on Monday night.

Paschal Chukwu added 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds while Elijah Hughes added 20 points, Frank Howard finished with 16 and Oshae Brissett had 14 for the Orange (12-5, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Syracuse held Duke to 2-of-8 shooting in overtime and to just 21 percent shooting from 3-point range while earning its second victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium in three years.

Battle's jumper about a minute into OT gave Syracuse the lead for good at 89-88. Duke followed that with four consecutiv­e empty possession­s — three missed 3s and a turnover that Howard turned into an easy layup.

RJ Barrett's 3 pulled the Blue Devils to 93-91, but Chukwu countered with a dunk from Howard to make it a five-point game.

Zion Williamson had a careerhigh 35 points and 10 rebounds, and his free throw with 16.2 seconds left in regulation tied it at 85 for Duke (14-2, 3-1), but he missed a second go-ahead foul shot. Brissett grabbed the rebound for Syracuse, but Battle's 3-pointer before the buzzer bounced off the back iron.

Barrett finished with 23 points on 8-of-30 shooting, and added 16 rebounds and nine assists.

The Blue Devils lost starting point guard Tre Jones to a right shoulder injury early in the first half. Jones collided with Syracuse's Frank Howard while chasing a loose ball with 14:23 left in the first half.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski said the injury, an AC joint separation, will keep Jones “out for a while.”

Duke’s Cam Reddish missed the game due to illness.

The Orange forced the Blue Devils to attempt a school-record 43 3-pointers. They made only nine. finished with 23 points, but was 4 of 17 from 3-point range.

“When you get two guys hurt and injured, there is no game plan anymore,” Krzyzewski said. “Our game plan was to pick them up full-court, put pressure on the ball, and that was working pretty well. Then, you're trying to survive, really.”

BAYLOR 73 OKLAHOMA STATE 59

King McClure had a careerhigh 29 points, nine rebounds and four assists to help lead the Bears past the Cowboys at Stillwater. Okla.

McClure scored 20 first-half points and hit a career-best seven 3-pointers.

Jared Butler scored 16 points and Makai Mason had 13, including a 10-foot jump shot with 9.8 seconds remaining to give the Bears a five-point lead. Mason also made two free throws with 3.7 seconds to go to seal it for Baylor (10-6, 2-2 Big 12).

Baylor made 15 of 25 from 3point range, including 11 of 14 in the first half, setting a new season high for made 3s before halftime.

Curtis Jones led Oklahoma State (8-9, 2-3) with 18 points off the bench, while Cam McGriff had his second straight doubledoub­le with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Oklahoma State, which had won two in a row, also set a season-high from 3-point range, going 13 of 29.

The Cowboys went ahead 6054 on Jones' layup with 8:30 remaining, but Baylor went on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes and led the rest of the way. During that stretch,

Oklahoma State went 1 for 12 from the floor, including 0 for 6 from 3, and made just 2 of 5 free throws.

Jones' layup got OSU to within 67-66 with 59.9 seconds left, but McClure sank two free throws with 44.6 seconds to go.

PITTSBURGH 75 FLORIDA STATE 62

Trey McGowens had 30 points and seven rebounds, Xavier Johnson scored 16 and the Panthers pulled away late for a victory over the No. 11-ranked Seminoles at Pittsburgh.

MARYLAND 64, WISCONSIN 60

Anthony Cowan Jr. hit a pivotal 3-pointer with 44 seconds left, and the No. 19 Terrapins edged the Badgers at College Park, Md., after blowing a 21-point lead in the second half.

NEBRASKA 66, INDIANA 51

Glynn Watson Jr. scored 15 points, Isaac Copeland added 14 and James Palmer Jr. to help the Cornhusker­s lead throughout an upset of the No. 25 Hoosiers at Bloomingto­n, Ind.
