“A Star Is Born”: The Golden Globes were just a bad dream. With Oscar nominations about a week away, now’s the time to reassure ourselves that Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga deserve all the awards for their emotional take on this Hollywood favorite. He’s a principled rocker tumbling down a hill of addiction when he recognizes the star in her waiting to be, well, you know. Too soon she’ll outgrow him — she always does in this tale — and he’ll fall again, but we’ll always have “Shallow.”

“Halloween”: Forty years later, “Halloween” gets the sequel it deserves. It echoes the original — relentless killer Michael Myers escapes from an asylum and heads home to Haddonfield on Halloween — but goes somewhere new, exploring the impact of that night of terror on final girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). She became a survivalist, forsaking her family — and some say losing her mind — because she knows the bogeyman always comes back. In the meantime, Michael’s victims respect the past (a wayward baby sitter) and skewer the present (a pair of true-crime podcasters.) Also: “The Old Man & the Gun,” “Once Upon a Deadpool”

“Obsession”: Fans of Brian de Palma could program a festival from recent reissues of the director’s work. Start with “De Niro and De Palma,” three early films packaged together by Arrow Films. Follow up with “Sisters,” with Margot Kidder in the title role, recently released by Criterion. Cap it off with “Obsession,” a variation on Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” in classic Hollywood style. Cliff Robertson is a wealthy New Orleans businessman who falls for a woman (Genevieve Bujold) with an uncanny resemblance to the wife he lost years before in a botched kidnap ransom attempt.
