No. 8 Texas Tech handed first Big 12 defeat

LUBBOCK — Marial Shayok scored 20 points, Michael Jacobson had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Iowa State beat No. 8 Texas Tech 68-64 on Wednesday night, handing the Red Raiders their first Big 12 loss.

The Cyclones (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) stopped a two-game losing streak coming off a 17-point win over No. 7 Kansas that gave them a 2-0 start in conference. Iowa State matched its win total from last season, the school’s lowest in 16 years.

The Red Raiders (15-2, 4-1) were the last team without a conference loss and missed on a chance for their first 5-0 start in the Big 12, going back to 1996-97. The Red Raiders, whose only other loss was to No. 1 Duke, and Jayhawks are tied for the Big 12 lead.

HOUSTON 69, SMU 58

Corey Davis Jr. scored 20 points, and Armoni Brooks added 19 with five 3-pointers as the No. 21 Cougars led throughout in a win over the Mustangs in Dallas.

Davis hit a 3-pointer for the game’s first points, and Houston (17-1, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) jumped out to a 12-4 lead after Brooks made three early 3s. The Cougars led 31-22 at halftime after Brooks buried a long straightaw­ay 3 just before the break.

Jimmy Whitt Jr. had 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting for SMU (11-6, 3-2), which played most of the game without senior guard Jarrey Foster (sprained left knee).

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson got his 600th career win in 30 seasons, and his 100th victory in five seasons with the Cougars. Sampson, who has a 600-319 overall record, previously coached at Indiana, Oklahoma, Washington State and Montana Tech.

KANSAS ST. 74, OKLAHOMA 61

Barry Brown scored 25 points, and Dean Wade added 20 to help the Wildcats beat the No. 20 Sooners in Norman, Okla.

It was Kansas State’s second straight road win over a ranked team — the Wildcats (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) won at Iowa State last Saturday. It was also Wade’s second game back since missing six in a row with a torn tendon in his right foot.

IOWA 89, PENN ST. 82

Luka Garza matched a seasonhigh 22 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds, and the No. 23 Hawkeyes edged the Nittany Lions in State College, Pa.

Women KANSAS ST. 87, TEXAS 69

Kayla Goth had 20 points and tied her career-high with 12 assists, and the Wildcats used a big first half to defeat the No. 11 Longhorns in Manhattan, Kan.

Christiann­a Carr added 19 on points 7-of-10 shooting, including four 3-pointers, for the Wildcats (11-6, 2-3 Big 12).

Sug Sutton had 22 points for Texas (14-3, 4-1), which had won seven straight and seven straight over KSU. Danni Williams had 18.

BAYLOR 94, KANSAS 68

Chloe Jackson scored a seasonhigh 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting and had eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the No. 2 Lady Bears to a win over the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan.

Kalani Brown added 15 points, DiDi Richards 14, and Lauren Cox and NaLyssa Smith had 13 apiece for the Bears (14-1, 4-0 Big 12). With Texas losing at Kansas State, Baylor took over sole possession of first place in the Big 12.

NOTRE DAME 80 VIRGINIA TECH 51

Jessica Shepard had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the topranked Fighting Irish took command with a 24-1 run in the second quarter to beat the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va.

CONNECTICU­T 75, TULANE 33

Megan Walker scored a careerhigh 34 points, and Katie Lou Samuelson added 17 to power the second-ranked Huskies over the Green Wave in New Orleans.

WEST VIRGINIA 73, IOWA ST. 64

Lucky Rudd and Tynice Martin combined for 42 points, 16 in the fourth quarter when they made 12 of 14 free throws, and the Mountainee­rs pulled away for a win over the No. 18 Cyclones in Morgantown, W.Va.
