SAPD: Video shows slaying

-

A San Antonio man told police he was acting in self-defense when he killed another man outside his home. His surveillance system showed something else, police said.

David Medina, 30, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder. He’s accused of fatally shooting Bernardo Sandoval, 25, on Feb. 18 in the 200 block of Leonidas Drive.

Medina told police that he fired the shot that killed Sandoval after Sandoval and another man showed up armed at Medina’s home and attacked him.

Investigators discovered Medina recently had video cameras installed in his front yard, according to his arrest affidavit. But when they tried to review the video, they discovered the DVR system was unplugged and missing, police said.

While executing a search warrant, officers found the DVR system, along with Eva Sanchez, 23, in a back bedroom under the bed covers, the affidavit says. Police arrested her on suspicion of tampering with evidence.

The system had captured footage of the shooting, according to the affidavit, which showed it was not justified.

“(Medina) exited his residence with his gun drawn, he rapidly approached the victim and shot him twice in the chest,” investigators wrote in the affidavit.

Medina’s bail was set at $250,000, while Sanchez’s bail was set at $5,000, jail records showed.
