17: East Central’s spot in this week’s MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national softball rankings. The Hornets are the only area team to make the list.

61: Consecutive district softball games won by Johnson before Monday’s 6-2 setback vs. South San. The streak is believed to be the longest in area history. The Jaguars’ previous league loss was a 2-1 decision vs. Churchill on March 7, 2014. South San scored six straight runs to rally from an early 2-0 deficit.

Career wins for Johnson boys soccer coach Michael Barranco, who reached the milestone during the Jaguars’ 7-0 triumph vs. South San on March 5. Barranco, in his ninth season, previously coached at MacArthur and was the 2013 Express-News coach of the year. He’s led Johnson (2017) and MacArthur (2013) to the Region IV-6A tournament.

Career wins for Burbank baseball coach Romeo Barrera, who accomplished the feat during the Bulldogs’ 8-4 decision over Canyon Lake at the Canyon Lake tournament March 8. He earned his 200th win at Burbank during a 9-4 victory over Schertz John Paul II on the same day. The 2007 Express-News coach of the year, Barrera previously coached at Crystal City, Alba-Golden and Corpus Christi West Oso.

Odds and ends

Lucky 13: Harlandale senior pitcher/first baseman Raven Segovia hit a home run Wednesday in the Indians’ 19-1 win over Kennedy. The homer was perhaps a display of unprecedented consistency. Segovia has hit a home run on March 13 for three straight years. She had one against Uvalde as a sophomore in 2017 and last year as a junior vs. Veterans Memorial’s junior varsity team.

Gig ’em: Steele junior swimmer Evelyn Bruner has committed to national power Texas A&M. She considered LSU, Auburn and Arizona.

Bruner, the Region VII-6A meet top girls swimmer the past two seasons, finished third last month in the 200-yard freestyle at the UIL Class 6A state championships — her first state medal — and was seventh in the 100 freestyle. She placed sixth in both events at state in 2018. Bruner qualified for state as a freshman in 2017 in the 200 and 500 freestyles.
