Dolphins trade Tannehill to Titans; Hunt suspended
Ryan Tannehill’s reign as the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins is over.
Miami traded its starting quarterback for the last seven seasons to Tennessee on Friday, along with a 2019 sixth-round pick, in exchange for a 2020 fourthround pick and a 2019 seventh-round selection.
Tannehill’s sports agency tweeted that Tannehill signed a one-year deal with the Titans. He will replace Blaine Gabbert as the backup to Marcus Mariota. Tennessee general manager Jon Robinson said Friday that Gabbert will be released.
Tannehill, who played at Texas A&M, became the starting quarterback as a rookie in 2012 and has yet to take a postseason snap.
His contract was to balloon to $18.7 million in base salary this year, and he would have counted $26.6 million against the salary cap.
Tannehill, 30, is coming off a 2018 season in which he started 11 games and threw for 1,979 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 64.2 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 92.7.
Miami only has two quarterbacks — Luke Falk, a second-year player claimed off the waiver wire last offseason, and Jake Rudock, a former St. Thomas Aquinas standout — on the roster. Brock Osweiler and David Fales, who served as Tannehill’s backup last season, are unrestricted free agents.
Browns RB gets 8-game sanction
The NFL suspended Cleveland running back Kareem Hunt for eight games after a video showed him kicking a woman and his involvement in a fight at a resort.
The league cited a violation of its personal-conduct policy “for physical altercations at his residence in Cleveland last February and at a resort in Ohio last June.” Hunt will not be paid during the half-season suspension, which he will not appeal.
The league recently completed an investigation that included a review of law enforcement records, video and electronic communications and interviews with witnesses as well as Hunt, who said he met with commissioner Roger Goodell last week.
Hunt, 23, who said he wants to “again apologize for my actions,” will be allowed to practice with the Browns through training camp until the suspension begins Aug. 31 after the final roster reduction.
Hunt was released last season by the Kansas City Chiefs after a video surfaced showing him pushing and kicking a woman.
