Goodell: Interference reviews are working

- AREA SCOREBOARD

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the new video review rule for pass interference is working as expected, with only obvious mistakes by officials being corrected.

Through Week 6, the league has had 44 reviews related to interference, and the onfield ruling was reversed seven times.

“I think coaches understood replay was not going to correct every pass interference close call,” Goodell said Wednesday at the close of the twoday owners’ meetings. “It’s not possible to make it perfect, and we’re not reofficiating these plays. The thought process was to correct the obvious and clear error. I think it’s settling out where we expected.”

The new rule approved as a oneyear experiment allows pass interference calls or noncalls to be challenged by coaches and reviewed via replay. When the rule was adopted last spring, Goodell said, coaches understood that close calls wouldn’t be changed. The reversal rate so far is 16 percent.

Osweiler retires after seven years

Freeagent quarterback Brock Osweiler, 28,says he is retiring from the NFL, according to a Denver TV station and ESPN.

The former Texans, Broncos, Dolphins and Browns quarterback told 9News in Denver that he was “grateful for the time I did receive playing in the National Football League.”

Osweiler's biggest NFL contribution was when he went 52 as a starter in place of an injured Peyton Manning for the 2015 Broncos, helping them earn the AFC’s top seed en route to a victory in Super Bowl 50. That led to a $72 million contract with the Texans, who traded him to the Browns after one difficult season.

Eagles could have top corners back

Jalen Mills (foot) and Ronald Darby (hamstring) were back at practice Wednesday, boosting Philadelphia’s depleted secondary.

The team’s starting cornerbacks haven’t played together in a game since last Oct. 28. They could be on the field Sunday night when the Eagles (33) visit Dallas (33).

The Eagles are 135 when Mills and Darby both play.

Three teams make QB changes

The Tennessee Titans want to jumpstart an offense that has just one touchdown over the past 10 quarters, so they’re turning to veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill and benching Marcus Mariota.

The winless Miami Dolphins will have Ryan Fitzpatrick make his first start since Week 2 in place of Josh Rosen when the Dolphins play at Buffalo.

In Pittsburgh, coach Mike Tomlin said that quarterback Mason Rudolph will return to the starting lineup after being cleared following a concussion he sustained on Oct. 6. Rookie Devlin “Duck” Hodges filled in nicely in a 2417 win over the Chargers.

Seahawks’ Dissly out for season

Will Dissly will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles.

The Seahawks’ secondyear tight end out of the University of Washington is scheduled to have surgery Thursday, a source confirmed to The Seattle Times.

Dissly had emerged as one of Russell Wilson’s top targets. His 23 receptions in the first five games were second on the team and his four touchdowns were the most on the team.

Odds and ends

Saquon Barkley was a fullgo at practice Wednesday, increasing the likelihood he will play against the Arizona Cardinals. … The winless Bengals (06) expect to be without their top two cornerbacks when they host Jacksonville. Dre Kirkpatrick (left knee) and William Jackson III (shoulder) likely will be sidelined. … The Oakland Raiders have signed tight end Darren Waller toa multiyear contract extension. Waller leads the team with 37 catches.
