-

A man who was trying to evade authorities Tuesday afternoon was apprehended after allegedly punching a deputy, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.

Joseph Garcia, 39, was checking in at the Bexar County Probation office when officers discovered he had a warrant out for his arrest. When officers attempted to apprehend Garcia, he punched a deputy several times in the face before running, Salazar said.

The deputy chased Garcia a mile and a half to the corner of Buena Vista and Colorado Street just west of downtown before Garcia tried to crawl into a drainage ditch to escape. Garcia made it about 70 feet into the tunnel, but BCSO K9s were called out to apprehend him and

Garcia finally surrendered.

Salazar said Garcia is a violent offender and a member of the Mexican Mafia. He has had several arrests for weapons charges, felony drug possession and family violence.

“He is certainly not someone we wanted to take chances with,” Salazar said.

The deputy is doing OK, Salazar said. He praised the deputy for being persistent and capturing Garcia.

“The deputies did an outstanding job, and I am very, very proud of them,” Salazar said.

Garcia was arrested on the original warrant for felon in possession of a firearm as well as additional charges for evading and assault on a peace officer.

Tuesday what happened to a woman and her newborn who were reported missing last week.

Heidi Broussard, 33, and her daughter, Margot Carey, who was born Nov. 26, were reported missing Thursday evening. Police say the two were last seen as Broussard dropped off a child at an elementary school that morning. Broussard and the baby are believed to have returned to their apartment but haven’t been seen since.

Police Detective Brad Herries said authorities are exploring “every possibility” and at this point are assuming they are alive.

“It’s possible that Heidi and Margot have left on their own accord,” Herries said. “It’s also possible that there may be something nefarious or foul play involved.”

He said police do not have a person of interest in the case.
