Barbacoa, fixings right to your door

- Mi Frijoles Compiled from staff reports

Cuco’s Barbacoa, a new San Antonio restaurant that delivers barbacoa to customers’ doorsteps, is open and accepting online orders.

Packages include barbacoa, tortillas (flour and corn), charro beans, salsa, pico de gallo and soda. They range from the El Grandecito ($32.99 for 2 pounds of barbacoa), the El Cuco ($18.99 for 1 pound) and the La Chiquitita ($10.99 for a halfpound). All orders come with a $3.99 delivery fee.

Customers are encouraged to make their orders online at least one day in advance at cucos.site. The site allows customers to pick the date (Fridays through Sundays) and time for delivery in hourly increments from 6 a.m. through 3 p.m.

Currently, delivery is limited to businesses and residences inside the 78201, 78213 and 78212 ZIP codes that include Olmos Park and Balcones Heights. Additional ZIP codes will be added later.

“We want to be more prepared on our end, and this allows us to make sure we have plenty of barbacoa for everybody, and we will be able to get it to customers hot and fresh,” said co-owner Alysha Plaza, who runs the restaurant with her husband, Santos.

Cuco’s operates in a building near Woodlawn Lake, and Plaza said she has plans to eventually open the restaurant for pick-up service, but will do deliveries exclusively until COVID-19 concerns decrease.

The Plaza family has been in the restaurant business since 1975, when Santos’ grandmother, Olga Plaza, opened the nowclosed Cuco’s Mexican Restaurant on Blanco Road.
