Comal County deputy shot attempting to arrest suspect
A Comal County Sheriff's deputy was shot as he was trying to serve an arrest warrant Thursday in a Spring Branch gated community, about 45 miles north of San Antonio.
Deputies were at a home in the 1400 block of Springwood when a single gunshot rang out, a neighbor said.
Don Bandy, 53, who lives next door, said he heard the deputies tell the man, whose name has not been released, “We have a warrant; we're not going away.”
The officers were talking to the man through his front door, Bandy said. It appeared they were giving him time to come out when the gunfire erupted, he said.
Bandy then saw a deputy holding his arm, walking to the street.
“We realized he had been shot,” Bandy said.
The officer was taken in a patrol car to nearby Jumbo Evans Boulevard, where he boarded an Airlife helicopter, Bandy said.
Comal County Sheriff's officials identified the officer as Eddy Luna, a 29-year veteran of the department. He had non-life threatening injuries but underwent surgery at University Hospital in San Antonio.
Luna, a U.S. Army veteran, is a graduate of New Braunfels High
School, officials said. He started his career with the sheriff 's office in September 1991 as a corrections officer.
Since then, he has served as a deputy and a detective and is now working as a warrants deputy.
The man accused of shooting Luna has lived at that Springwood address for more than 10 years, neighbors said. He was arrested, according to the sheriff 's office. They did not say what the charge was in the original felony warrant.
Bandy, who has lived on the street for 13 years, said his neighbor has had other encounters with authorities.
“He's just different,” Bandy said.
