“Antebellum”: Singer and actress Janelle Monáe stars in “Antebellum,” once intended for theaters, which presents the horrors of slavery through the lens of a horror movie. She plays a progressiv­e contempora­ry author who, in a “Twilight Zone” twist or something worse, becomes a captive on a pre-civil War plantation. Critics have questioned how the filmmakers stitch together the two halves of their story, but the central message — the persistenc­e of racism — couldn’t be clearer.

newsman (Gregory Peck) who scoops her up. Hepburn won the Oscar for what was her first starring role, and she’s a marvel. The bitterswee­t ending may surprise contempora­ry audiences, even if they see it coming. You really can’t run around town with a hot princess, at least not for long.

The Roys, the family jockeying for control of a conservati­ve media empire in this HBO series, give us insight. They are like rats with their tails tied together going at each other. Whoever wins is guaranteed to be a rat with a lot of baggage, but it’s fascinatin­g to watch.
