Game of the week

CANYON LAKE AT JOURDANTON
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Canyon Lake (2-1) update: The
Hawks responded to a loss against Wimberley in the season opener with victories against La Grange and Beeville. Last week, in a 46-35 victory against Beeville, Canyon Lake grinded it out with 446 rushing yards. Quarterback Peyton Mcmullen and running backs Derek Wiatrek and Jesse Horner each topped 100 yards on the ground. Jourdanton (2-1) update: Jourdanton, No. 7 in the Expressnews Sub-5a rankings, is coming off a 35-7 victory over Pleasanton — its first win against its neighbor since 1955. Senior quarterback Cole Andrus is the area’s leading passer with 922 yards and 10 touchdowns. Senior Jarel Lilly leads the area with 21 receptions for 457 yards and four scores. Notable: This is the first meeting between Jourdanton and Canyon Lake, which opened in 2008. Class 3A Jourdanton plays its third 4A opponent in a row. It’s the Indians’ final tune-up before opening District 14-3A-II play against Marion next week. While Jourdanton is predominately a passing team (922 passing, 352 rushing), Canyon Lake prefers the run game (1,182 rushing, 291 passing). The Hawks lead the area in total offensive yardage and rushing yardage.

Poteet at Sinton, 7:30 p.m. Friday: Poteet (3-0), which was a combined 6-25 over the previous three seasons, is aiming to win four games for the first time since 2016 when the Aggies went 7-4. UNDER THE RADAR GAME
Sweetwater at Boerne, 7:30 p.m. Friday: Sweetwater (1-1), a District 1-4A-II member, makes the 3½ hour drive to meet the Greyhounds for the first time. The game was already set before the COVID-19 pandemic forced mass schedule changes across the state. Boerne (3-0), the area’s top-ranked team, has relied on junior quarterback Rashawn Galloway for offense. Galloway has passed for 615 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 166 yards and four scores. The Greyhounds have allowed 20 points in three games.
Sweetwater bounced back from a season-opening loss to Stephenville to defeat San Angelo Lake View 58-42 last week.
The Mustangs are 5-16 over the previous two years and are three years removed from a remarkable four-season run in which they were 48-7 and made a state semifinal appearance in 2016.
